Schema markup is the difference between being read and being quoted

Structured data used to be an SEO nice-to-have that earned you a star rating. Now it is how machines decide what your business is.

For a decade, schema markup was sold on rich results. Add review markup, get stars in search. Add recipe markup, get a card. It was cosmetic, and plenty of sites skipped it without much consequence.

That calculus changed when answer engines arrived. Schema is no longer decoration on a search listing — it is the most reliable statement a site can make about what it is. When a model needs to know whether "Soards" is a trucking company in Arizona or a surname, a LocalBusiness node with an address and a service area answers definitively. Prose does not.

A schema graph, not a schema tag

The common mistake is adding one Organization block to the homepage and calling it done. What actually works is a connected graph: the organization, the services it provides, the areas it serves, the pages that explain each service, and the breadcrumb trail that shows how they relate.

Each node should reference the others. A Service node that names its provider, a provider that lists its offer catalog, an Article that names its publisher. The relationships are the value — they let a machine build a small, confident model of your business instead of a bag of disconnected facts.

The types that matter for most businesses

Ninety percent of the value comes from a short list.

  • 01Organization or ProfessionalService — who you are, with your real URL, logo, and contact path.
  • 02LocalBusiness — where you are and which areas you serve, if location is part of the buying decision.
  • 03Service — one per real offering, with a description and a provider reference.
  • 04BreadcrumbList — how a deep page sits in the site, so context survives when a page is read in isolation.
  • 05Article — for anything editorial, with a publish date and author so freshness is machine-readable.

Getting it wrong is worse than skipping it

Invalid or dishonest markup does real damage. Schema that claims reviews you do not have, or describes services you do not offer, gets flagged and discounted — and once a source is treated as unreliable, the whole domain pays for it.

Mark up what is true. Validate it. Keep it in sync when the business changes. That is unglamorous work and it is the entire game.
