What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — and how it differs from SEO

AEO is the work that gets you cited inside an AI answer instead of ranked on a results page. Here is what it is, how it differs from SEO, and where the two overlap.

Answer Engine Optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of making your business the answer an AI assistant gives when someone asks a question it could solve by naming you. Where SEO targets a position on a results page, AEO targets a citation inside a generated answer. The goal moves from "rank high so they click me" to "be named so they contact me directly."

You will also hear it called AIO (Answer/ AI Optimization) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). The labels overlap; the work underneath is the same: make your business legible, consistent, and quotable to the systems that write answers.

The shift from ranked to cited

Classic search shows ten blue links and rewards the click. The further up you are, the more traffic you get. An AI answer removes the list from the transaction. The assistant reads its sources, synthesizes a paragraph, and names two or three businesses. Nobody clicks through ten options. They read the paragraph and act on it.

That changes what matters. Keyword density does not help a model decide whether to name you. Structured, unambiguous facts do. A page that states your service area in plain text, marks up your business with schema, and answers a real question in a single sentence outperforms a keyword-tuned page that says nothing definite.

Where SEO and AEO overlap

They share most of their foundations. Both reward a fast, crawlable site, clear content, and consistent business facts. A site built well for search is usually most of the way to being citeable by AI. The differences are at the edges — AEO cares more about structured data, crawler access for AI bots, and extractable answers, while SEO still cares about links and position.

If you have already done the SEO work, you are not starting AEO from zero. You are tuning the parts that decide whether a model quotes you.

Where to start

Run the three-question test: ask ChatGPT to describe your business by name, ask Perplexity for the best provider of your service in your city, and read the Google AI Overview for your service plus your city. The outcome tells you whether the issue is identification (they can't find you), parsing (they found you but mangled the facts), or quoting (they could not extract a clean answer). Each one has a known fix, and none of them require more content — they require better structure on the content you already have.

If you want the deeper version of that check, our AI search visibility service starts with a full audit of what the assistants can and can't see on your site.
